Are there any disadvantages of owning 2 border collies as opposed to 1?? your commets would be appreciated.?
I have a 11 month old border collie dog and plan to buy a 3year old BC bitch. I am worried a) about the food bill and b) the disruption to my current dogs routine. Has anyone got two already?
I would like to get a companion for my current dog.
I have been informed that the best quality food for cost effectiveness is buying direct from a farmers wholesale suppliers as opposed to high cost domestic brands i.e hills science plan and pedigree chum.
Any other information you think would be benificial to me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Andy Warnock
Sorry but it doesn’t sound to me like you should get another dog, especially another border collie.
It sounds to me like you are wanting another dog because you don’t spend enough time with the one you already have.
That is one of the worst reasons to buy a second dog.
Also, you are worried about money? Pets deserve owners who can provide them with everything they do and might ever need for the rest of their lives.
I know a few people who "love" their pets and therefore overlook the fact that the conditions they keep them in are less than suitable.
I think that is it good for high energy dogs like border collies to have a play partner BUT you situation sounds far from suitable.
Your border collie will be no better off with a companion if you are not meeting its basic needs for human companionship and exercise and stimulation.
Andy I ask you to think ‘why does your dog need a companion?’
If you are not at home often and feeling guilty aboout that then do not get another dog. It is very unfair to coop up two dogs just to make you feel better, they certainly don’t feel better.
If you are concerned about the food bill, do not get another dog.
If you are out then its double poop, double wee, and longer walks when you do get to see them. Border collies are the most lovely dogs and should be given lots of love and attention, they deserve it.

I have 3 currently along with my aussie and a foster bc cross, with no problems but as a caviat: the more border collies you have the more time you spend exercising them…one will NOT entertain the other for sufficient mental and physcal exercise for the breed, you will naturally spend more for food and vet care. Feeding either BG (Before Grains) or a similar quality kibble I go through about 40#s of food every 2 -2.5 wks with 5 dogs at $50.00 a bag so about $100/mo of kibble. I do also feed raw and if I alternate food types the kibble naturally last longer.
