What can I use to make a piece of tin rust?

For a project, I want to use a tin can, like a coffee can and I need to have some of the surface show rust. The rest will be painted. Is there a product available that will cause the surface to rust? (Please don’t tell me to leave it outside for a couple of weeks)

coke a cola,
wet steel wool,
drain cleaner,

Oven cleaner. It will pit the surface then wash that off and add salt to the areas you want rusted. And yes…Do this in the sun..It should only take a few days.

Tin will corrode but it doesn’t technically "rust".

    That can is plated steel.
Scuff off the plating in the area you want the rust.
Degrease if, wet with salt water and keep damp exposed to air..
You should have rust in a day or less.

Actually, they make paint that really resembles rust. It is used on many faux antique reproductions and available at hardware stores.
