Why do most bread bins have "bread" written on the side?
…is it so that we don’t mistake them for the laundry basket? Not to mention Tea Coffee and Sugar jars, Biscuit Tins etc. My neighbour has a chopping board with CHOPPING BOARD written on it. Whats it all about?
They are the American models, they have to spell everything out over there so as not to get sued
So you don’t put rubbish in it, otherwise it’s just a bin.
It’s also for people who have no idea what a kitchen is or how it works, i.e. some first year uni students and some husbands!!

You can understand the TEA, COFFEE, SUGAR thing, as they are normally three jars the same, and having the contents on the outside helps, but to put BREAD on the bread bin suggests that whoever makes these things thinks people are idiots.

Well I guess it is so it isn’t confused with other things to an extent – especially Tea and Coffee and biscuit tins. However, my bread bin has nothing on it. The thing which has "Bread" written on it actually contains my flour etc!!! ; )

Not all Bread Bins have bread on the side, as it is pretty obvious what they are.
However it is usually done as a decorative element. Usually you’ll find the bread bin can be bought as a set with Tea/Sugar/Coffee pots and they design ‘bread’ onto the bread bin so there is some Aesthetic Uniformity between them all.
