I want to start scrapbooking, but where do I start?
I have been interested in scrapbooking for a while. When I go to Michael’s I get overwhelmed by the scrapbooking section! I have no idea where to start. Can someone please help me? I would like to start a scrapbook for my baby boy who is 1 year old. (I guess as a starting point)

Here’s a list of what you need to get started. I put my recommended brands in parenthesis:
1. Paper trimmer (Fiskars $20)
2. Spring action titanium scissors (Fiskars $14). These are great for precise cutting and poking holes.
3. Scotch glue stick $3. There are tons of adhesive options but it’s fine to start with a glue stick.
4. Idea magazine (Scrapbooks Etc $5)
5. Tool kit (Making Memories $20 or $40)
6. Cutting mat (Basic Grey Magnetic Cutting Mat $24)
Go shopping through your magazine and pick out one layout that inspires you. Make a list of the types of things used on the page. For example: cardstock, brads, patterned paper, ribbon, buttons, punches, stamps. Then, buy what you need to recreate the page. Colors and patterns can be your own. The leftovers will start your on-hand supplies and keep going from there. Michaels and similar stores can be very overwhelming. Be careful not to just buy everything you like! That gets very expensive, very quickly. ALWAYS take your coupon from the Sunday paper.
I like Hobby Lobby. Better prices and better selection.
If you have an Archiver’s by you they have free beginner classes. Also try your library. Mine has a ton of books. Look for scrapbooking and paper craft magazine there too.

Hello! I am a scrapbooking fool! lol I love making scrapbooks. if this is your first time I would just by a scrapbook (Walmart or Michael’s or crafts 2000) somewhere like that. then I would by some additional paper. The colorful pretty paper. Since its for your son you could get ones with balls on them (ex. baseball, football, basketballs). What is your son into? Like does he like balls, trucks, elmo whatever he is interested in I would by the stickers of that. They also make the 3-D stickers. They are a few dollars and you only get like 10-15 stickers but they are so cute. I would get a variety of both stickers. You will need a glue stick (I’d use it instead of tape) markers, colored pencils, stamps things like that. Things to put into your scrapbook besides pictures would be: things your son has made on paper (crafts, coloring pages, pictures he drew). I also have a page or 2 in my scrapbooks for people (like family and close friends) to sign or write a note to my children on. It is really a good idea and they can look back and she what everyone wrote to them. There is tons of things you can do to make it an awesome scrapbook! Have fun!!

Because the select in craft stores can be overwhelming, a great way to start is to take a look at some scrapbooking layouts online. This way you can get an idea of what other people are doing and start thinking about what you like, what you don’t, and what you think will work for your book. I also think one of the easiest ways to narrow down your scrapbook ideas is to start with photos and other memorabilia that you want to use. Make the pages around the photos, and use those themes, ideas and items to craft the rest of your book.

I think you are so smart to get started while your son is young. The first thing you have to do is choose an album. If you will look at the albums in most stores, they are called post bound albums. Open them up, and you will see that the pages are held to the post with about 1/8th inch of plastic. It is just a matter of TIME before they fall apart. People put so much work into these albums of love, and then they rip and come apart.
The Creative Memories album has a lifetime guarantee. It is held together with metal "straps" and the edges are reinforced to keep out light and dust. They also lay flat, which is another big difference.

For example, "My Precious (your son’s name)" and "I’m a big boy now" are just 2 of the titles…there are thousands. You will love this site!
Next, everything you purchase should be acid/lignon free, as you want to preserve your photos. Gosh, I have so much I could share with you, as remembering that your son will be most interested in looking at his photos….and your journalling as a mother.
